Summer Driver’s Education 30 Hour Asynchronous Theory Course

June 15 – 18, 2026 (In Person)

Dwight-Englewood School is pleased to once again offer a Summer Driver Education Theory Course through D-E 360°, in partnership with FNL Driving School.

Learning to drive is a meaningful milestone — a step toward independence, responsibility, and confidence. We see this course as both a practical skill-building opportunity and a rite of passage. Through D-E 360°, we approach Driver Education as BOLD learning: real-world preparation that equips students with knowledge, awareness, and accountability beyond the classroom.

Course Overview

The Summer Driver Education Theory Course fulfills the New Jersey State requirement for the written exam and is offered to:

  • High school students who are at least 15 years old as of June 1, 2026
  • Students who reside in New Jersey

The course is administered in person at Dwight-Englewood and taught by Mrs. Nancy Lustenberger, formerly of the D-E Physical Education Department, in partnership with FNL Driving School.

Enrollment is limited to 50 students.
Course Fee: $350

What Is Asynchronous Learning?

Portions of the course include asynchronous learning components. Asynchronous learning allows students to complete certain lessons independently, on their own schedule, within a defined timeframe – see schedule below. This format provides flexibility while ensuring that students master essential driving laws, safety principles, and responsible decision-making skills. Students are guided with clear expectations and deadlines but may complete coursework outside of traditional classroom hours.

This blended structure mirrors the independence required of safe drivers — managing time, absorbing information carefully, and demonstrating responsibility.

Behind-the-Wheel Requirement

To obtain a learner’s permit by age 16, students must also complete:

  • Six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
(This may be arranged directly with Mrs. Lustenberger or through another driving school.)

Students must hold their permit for a minimum of six months and be at least 17 years old before becoming eligible for a probationary license.

Insurance Benefits

Families should note an important financial advantage:
Students who complete both the classroom theory course and the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction are eligible for an automobile insurance reduction until age 21. Even students who already hold a learner’s permit but have not completed a formal classroom course may enroll in order to receive a certificate qualifying them for insurance savings.

At D-E, we believe BOLD learning extends into life skills that foster independence, safety, and long-term responsibility. Driver Education is more than passing a test — it is about preparing students to navigate the road, and adulthood, with confidence and care.
